Bass drums are usually created from only one bit of tree trunk, ordinarily mango or cedar, which can be hollowed out by both lathe or hand. More mature, larger sized drums were product of the dense but light bodyweight cottonwood tree which is never found now. Some bass drum shells are made of maple ply-Wooden, others have a barrel stave building.
